There will be a reception for the Spring Members Show at the Artists Studio & Gallery at Patriot Place (2 doors down from Dunkin Donuts) Saturday, March 10, 2-5 pm. All are welcome. This is a good opportunity to see who received ribbons in this year's show. Pictured above is this year's judge Eli Cedrone, standing in front of her selection as the "Best In Show", a watercolor painted by Margaret DeVito titled "Chioggia, Italy". Congratulations to Margaret and to the other 49 members of the Foxboro Art Association who submitted 100 works of art for display in the Gallery through March 25. Because of so many wonderful works, the judge had an extremely difficult time deciding who to give ribbons to. Visit the Gallery and see if you agree with her choices.

Spring Members Show March 2-25

The Artist's Studio & Gallery at Patriot Place will display our Spring Members' Show for four consecutive weekends in March. To make room, the Gallery had to strip the walls bare by 4 pm Thursday, March 1, (top photo) because this was when 50 of our members were scheduled to drop off 2 pieces each, all of which had to be hung in time for the Gallery to open on schedule at 5 pm the next day. Thanks to the help of many volunteers, the mission was accomplished. As a result, starting Friday March 2, patrons of Patriot Place can view the work of our talented members through March 25 (lower photo). Next week Copley artist Eli Cedrone will award ribbons in each medium and the Foxboro Art Asssociation will host a reception Saturday, March 10, 2-5 pm. But then it all has to be taken down to make room for the next show, the Franklin Art Association Spring Show, which will be on display March 30-April 7. Gallery hours are Friday 5-9, Saturday 1-9, and Sunday 11-6.

FAA member Claire Norris did an oil painting of Fenway Park. It is an 18 x 24 oil painting of a game between the New York Yankees and the Red Sox with Tim Wakefield pitching. The game was June of 2009 and they won!!

The Morini Gallery in Mansfield which is part of the MMAS is showing giclee reproductions of this painting. They are For Sale and the giclees are available in three different sizes with a black frame included. The sizes are: 9 x 12, 12 x 16 and 18 x 24. If anyone is interested in purchasing a giclee reproduction, theycan be seen at the Morini Gallery. The Gallery is located at 377 North Main Street in downtown Mansfield near the train station. McGurl To Lecture Saturday Feb. 25

Renowned artist Joseph McGurl will give a talk "Issues in Contemporary Realism," (with slide presentation) at 4 o'clock on Saturday Feb. 25 at the Guild of Bosotn Artists, 162 Newbury St., Boston. It is free and open to the public. A collection of his paintings will also be available.

Irish Paintout March 17 at Patriot Place

On Saturday March 17 Patriot Place will let artists use the empty store (which used to be the Apple Tech Store before it moved across the way) kitty corner across from Davio's and Verizon during its Irish Festival. This means we can have our "paintout" regardless of the weather. On a nice day we can also be outside, anywhere between the empty store and the gallery, provided we don't block any store entrances. Patriot Place would like us to also display any Irish art. Patriot Place invites all artists to join them for what is always a fun day. And don't forget to drop by the Gallery at Patriot Place and view the Foxboro Art Association Spring Members' Show.

"Reflections" in Sharon

Karen Gordon, Vera Cross and Sheila Pallay will exhibit watercolors, pastels and photography for a show titled "Reflections". The exhibit will be at the Lakeside Gallery in the Sharon Community Center, overlooking beautiful Lake Massapaog, 219 Massapaog Ave., Sharon, from Feb. 14 to March 30. A reception will be held Wednesday evening, Feb. 22, 7-9 pm.

Demonstrator Robert Bolster

At our February meeting oil painter Robert Bolster provided a multi-media presentation of his journey as an artist -- from his grade school drawings to his career as an illustrator and finally to his emergence as a fine art painter. It was a large Valentine's Day crowd of more than 40 attendees. Mr. Bolster showed photos of his work using Apple Pages software and then switched to a live demonstration of how he paints. He begins with a photograph as a reference, in this case a 20x24 photo of two pears. He always uses his own photographs, refines them with Photoshop and then prints them full-size using an Epson 2200 printer. He then places the finished photo on a shelf he has attached to his easel and paints on a canvas the same size as his photo. (See the top photo.) He tends to paint thinly on canvas he stretches himself and he uses Liquin to help extend the color and accelerate the drying process. Over recent years he developed a technique of dividing a large canvas into a series of squares -- sometimes up to 144 -- and attempts to paint six different squares per day when working in this manner. He feels this helps him be more productive as a professional artist. During his 90 minute demonstration he worked quickly painting a beautiful still-life which he donated for our raffle. Margaret Lachut was our happy winner, as were the folks who attended this wonderful presentation.

Irish Festival at Patriot Place March 17

St. Patrick's Day is Saturday, March 17, and once again Patriot Place has invited all of us to join in on their Irish Festival celebration. Space is limited within the art gallery with our March Members Show, but hopefully the luck of the Irish will bring us good weather. If so you can bring a table and your Irish artwork to Patriot Place. Or if you just want to come and paint outside the art gallery at Patriot Place that day, weather permitting, you are more than welcome to do so.

2d Lussier Workshop

Ten artists enjoyed the second workshop this year offered by David & Pam Lusier through the Foxboro Art Association. The workshop was held Sunday, Feb. 12, at the East Walpole Community Center,a bright and roomy space everyboddy seemed to like. The theme of the workshop was marine painting. David began with a demonstration (pictured above) before sending everybody off to paint their own masterpieces, while he and Pam circulated among the group, offering constructive suggestions. Everybody felt they learned something -- a worthwile experience for everyone!

Mansfield Show March 24-April 22

The Mansfield Music & Arts Association invites all 2-dimensional artists (except photographers) to join them in a “Breakout” exhibit March 24-Aprill 22. Artists must submit 2 pieces, one in your traditional style and one in a new, breakout style. Both pieces will hang together and will be juried. Cash awards ($75, 50,25) for the top 3 juried. The show will be at the Black Box Theater & Morini Gallery, near the center of Mansfield (377 North Main St.). A reception is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 5-7 pm. Tony's Mirror Stand

We are grateful to the Boyden Library for loaning us their ceiling mirror to use at our meetings for our watercolor demonstrators. To buy one of our own would cost upwards of $1,000. The only problem is that we can't install it in the ceiling at St. Mark's for structural reasons. Fortunately Tony Donovan has designed an elegant (and inexpensive) solution. Pictured above is the completed, 4-stanchion frame. The lower photo shows Tony working on one of the prototypes. The frame was especially designed with PVC pipes so it could be dismantled and stored with the mirror in Community Room closet safely. Thanks to Tony and the Boyden Library, the audience will now be able to watch future watercolor demonstrators without having to crowd around the table.

Bermuda Workshop May 4-6, 2012

Copley artist Eli Cedrone will conduct a 3-day workshop in Bermuda May 4-6. Bermuda was once her home and remains one of her favorite places to visit. Join her for a unique experience; from the breathtaking beaches of the South Shore to the winding alleyways of historic St. George’s, while learning the fundamentals of landscape and figure painting. $250 Rent Reimbursemet Grant

The Foxboro Cultural Council has granted the Art Association's application to reimburse its monthly rental expense during 2012. Because the Boyden Library is undergoing reconstuction, the Foxboro Art Association had to move its meeting place down the street to St. Mark's Episcopal Church. But, as a consequence, it incurs a $25 rental fee each month that it meets. These meetings are free and open to the public -- not just the members. And since the Art Association already pays professionals to perform at these meetings and to inform the audience about different aspects of their art, the Association felt these meetings enriched the whole community. Accordingly, it was felt that this new expense warranted community support. The Foxboro Cultural Council has agreed and has gramted reimbursement for ten meetings to be held this year. The Foxboro Cultural Council is a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, aimed at helping support local arts projects. We are very grateful.

The Norfolk Cultural Council is inviting all artists to its Open Juried Art Competition March 3 – March 31, 2012 at the Norfolk Library.
Reception: March 10, 5pm–7pm Awards, art, music & refreshments
Awards: Cash awards presented for the top 10 pieces of art
Entry Fee: $15 one entry, 2 for $20, maximum of 2 entries. Entry Fee is non-refundable. Please make check payable to Norfolk Cultural Council.
Application: Applications may be sent with payment. Check or money order will be accepted through the mail from January 16 through February 3. December Meeting

At our December meeting Tuesday evening, Tiago Finato (pictured above)enthralled the audience with his techniques in painting a still life. Tiago started with a gray, toned canvas, painting first a loose, abstract version of his composition, followed by painting in the darker elements and saving until the end the light-struck areas. All the while, Tiago explained the principles underlying his techniques. His demonstration was enjoyed by everyone and at the end of the meeting one of the members purchased the painting.
Frank Quinn noted that attendance at the meeting was free and open to the public and members were encouraged to bring friends or relatives with them to future meetings. The meetings are always held on the second Tuesday of the month. Therefore the next meeting will be Jan. 10.
Haydi Hurley is organizing a watercolor workshop with the wonderful Cindy Baron for the weekend of April 21. The cost is $60 per day and will be held in East Walpole. Contact Haydi at hchurley@comcast.net and let her know if you want to sign up for a 1-day or 2-day workshop.

Second Day Altenative for Lussier Workshop

Due to the great response for the David & Pam Lussier workshop, we have added a second Sunday, February 12, to allow for smaller groups and more individual attention -- but probably at a slightly higher price than the $55 originally quoted. Please let Tony Donovan (tony@asdonovan.com) know if you can commit to either date (1/29 or 2/12) as he will try to balance the number of participants over the two workshop dates. The cost is still to be determined, depending on how many we have for each date.

David Lussier Workshop set for January 29th IS NOW FULL

David Lussier Workshop
Jan. 29th

We are pleased to announce that the David Lussier workshop is now fully booked. The workshop with the team of David Lussier and Pamela Simpson will focus on painting water scenes. In this one-day workshop, we will learn how to interpret and simplify harbor scenes (boats, water, reflections, etc.). You will learn to draw and paint boats accurately and learn to understand how water and reflections behave and need to be interpreted. References photos will be provided or you can bring your own. This will be a fun workshop.

This workshop is open to all mediums as the Lussiers are proficient in all mediums and the concepts learned will apply to all mediums.

Thanks to Tony Donovan (tony@asdonovan.com) for organizing this workshop. Sunday, Jan. 29 is the week before the Soperbowl, so you won't miss any football games that day.
Cost: Because of the increased number of participants, the cost has been reduced to $55.

RECAP OF STUDIES CREATED AT THE DEMO

The nearly two-hour demo concentrated on four different surfaces and somehow I quickly was able to sketch four (!) paintings to show just how varied these surfaces can be.

Sennelier's Pastel Card is my favorite and so it was my opener. I created this landscape with two hay bales on dry-mounted charcoal colored Pastel Card. I find the paper, with its cork tooth, grabs color vibrantly.

The next surface was Canson Mi-Teintes paper, which has two distinct sides. The 'right' side (with the Canson watermark) offers a zillion small circular 'nubbies' on it which I am constantly feeling the need to eradicate. I have a hard time with this paper on the 'right' side, but this paper keeps you 'true' and the effect of it can be soft and beautiful.

A member made the observation that this piece looked like it had a netting over the entire surface - the exact 'nubbies' I'm describing! Yes, I think you're right on!

If you turn this Canson Mi-Teintes paper over to the 'wrong side, an entirely different effect is achieved. No 'nubbies' are there. It's smoother and, for my way of working, I enjoy myself more as I am not fighting the paper the entire time I'm painting. The pastel pigment sits nicely on the paper, simple as that.

To finish up the demo, I painted this incredibly dull start of a pastel which needs so much work I nearly didn't post it here. For the purposes of being accurate, I'm including it, pride be damned!

PastelMat by Clairefontaine is a relatively new surface which is so mind-boggling in its ability to accept more and more pastel and yet confounds because it has no tooth or grit to grab the pigment. The paper I had was white, and a lot is still showing through. More work to be done, but those in attendance got to see how one works on the surface.

My goal is to finish up what I can on these and post when they're completed. I hope I can keep on this positive flow of energy since the demonstration this week and get to them soon! Please cut me some slack on these studies. They were done in great haste and aren't refined yet.

Power Outage at the Gallery

The Saturday night snowstorm created a power outage at Patriot Place, forcing the gallery to close on Sunday. Members can pick up their art work from the Fall Members' Show Monday afternoon 2-4 pm and Tuesday evening 6-8 pm (provided the power is restored by then). Members can also retrieve their works this weekend during normal gallery hours, when RISD photgraphers will be showcased.

Cindy Baron Demonstrated at Oct. 11 Meeting

Cindy Baron loves to paint outdoors. And when she does, she usually paints in oil. Even though she is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, and teaches watercolor at RISDI, she is also an elite oil painter and her demo at this month's meeting was in oil. She so loves the outdoors, that she spent a good part of Hurricane Irene photographing the heaving coastline of Rhode Island. She believes that painting outdoors is one of the best ways to properly see things and to grow as an artist. Growing up in Indiana, she used to be known as the “Painter of Barns”. But since relocating to Rhode Island, she has become known as the “Painter of Rocks” – specifically the rocks along New England’s coastline. Fittingly, this was the subject of her demonstration Tuesday evening, the waves crashing against the rocky sea coast during Hurricane Irene. If you missed the meeting, you missed a terrific, and somewhat unique, demonstration in painting a tumultuous and dynamic sea coast. The Mansfield Art Association will host an opening reception this Saturday evening, Oct. 15, 7-9 pm at the Morini Gallery for a special show of original works by more than 15 artists entitled "Artistic Journey". Among the artists represented are several members of the Foxboro Art Association, including C.J. Carr, Marilyn Healey, BJ Bjork, Karole Nicholson, and Claire Norris. The Morini Gallery is also home to the Black Box Theater and is located near Mansfield center, 377 North Main Street. The show runs from Oct. 15 to Nov. 18.
The following Tuesday, Oct. 18, the Mansfield Art Association will hold their monthly meeting at the Morini Gallery. BJ Bjork will demonstrate his oil painting technique.

The Fall Members' Show held their reception on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Place Gallery and attracted more than a hundred visitors, not including the artists themselves. Everyone who came had a chance to mingle, second-guess the judge, and enjoy a delightful spread of low-calorie and not-so-low-calorie delights. We hope to do it again in March. So keep painting!

Fall Members Show at Patriot Place

120 pieces of art, created by 62 members of the Foxboro Art Association, were hung at the Artists' Studio and Gallery at Patriot Place on Friday, Sep 30 -- about twice what was displayed last year at the Boyden Library. These pieces will remain there for the entire month of October, rain or shine, Red Sox or not, until Sunday Oct. 30, when they will be taken down -- unless previously sold. This exposure at Patriot Place is an entirely new experience for our members, and it will be interesting to collect feedback from gallery visitors. It would also be appropriate for our artists who are exhibiting there to volunteer 4 hours of their time to sit at the gallery and collect such feedback. Two such volunteers are pictured above: Haydi Hurley and Joan Sweeney are holding court for the inaugural show Friday evening, Sep. 30.

(Note in the photo the new panels that were installed to accomodate the larger-than-expected show. We can thank Jack Gannon, our Vice President, for procuring and installing these panels just in the nick of time.) Remember that next Saturday Oct. 8, 2-4 pm, we will hold our reception. By then, ribbons will be awarded, and tomatoes will be made available to throw at the judge who couldn't possibly recognize the talent of so many of our talented artists!

Oh well. Art is subjective. And judges are more subjective than most. The important thing is that 62 members participated and made Patriot Place a prettier place to visit. Thanks to them for putting on a great show!

Fall Members Show in October at Patriot Place

Members of the Foxboro Art Association will exhibit their works at the Artist's Studio & Gallery at Patriot Place during the month of October. It is estimated that more than 100 works of art will on display each of the four weekends in October. The drop off is slated for Thursday September 29, 3-7 pm. And the works will be hung the following day. Since this is an all-volunteer effort, the members themselves will provide coverage at the Gallery in 4-hour shifts each weekend. But we still need lots more volunteers, especially for the first and third weekends in October. And while they are sitting at the gallery, socializing with the public and each other, they can also paint. THIS IS AN URGENT CALL TO ALL ARTISTS AND ART LOVERS.

Arts organizations throughout the state of Vermont are joining hands to support those Vermonters who were impacted by Hurricane Irene on August 28th. We are planning an online benefit art auction to begin as soon as our first works of art are committed. We ask that artists donate one work of art, preferably an unframed work on paper or another medium that can be easily shipped. We will accept a contributed work from everyone who is interested in participating with the understanding that some works may not sell. Modest reserve prices will be set on each piece. Our goal is to raise money for Vermonters in need and please keep in mind that the sale price is not a reflection on the quality of your work. Art collectors are invited to donate as well.

First Meeting Recap

Our first meeting of the year at St. Mark's Episcopal Church is now history. Secretary Haydi Hurley counted 53 members in attendance, including 15 new members, to watch Connecticut artist Bob Norieka demonstrate his "fluid acrylic" technique . Because St. Mark's does not have an overhead mirror, the audience crowded around Bob's table to watch him paint. Bob is best known as a watercolorist, but has painted in oils, and currently works in fluid acrylics, which has the quick-drying advantage of watercolor, but the "fixability" of oils, because it can be painted over. Bob is a spontaneous painter who planned to paint boats for his demo but, on the spur of the moment, chose to paint from a photo he found of our recent paintout at Patriot Place. He worked quickly and persevered good naturedly as members socialized around him. In the end, he produced a truly attractive painting of people gathering at Patriot Place --something worthy to be shown to a larger audience of art lovers.

Our next meeting is the second Tuesday of October. And don't forget that all artists are invited to participate in the upcoming Paintout @ Patriot Place Saturday afternoon Sep. 24.

Patriot Place has invited all local artists to join their Harvest Celebration with another paintout Saturday Sep. 24. The cranberry bog behind the Bass Pro Shop will be harvested for the first time, presumably by Ocean Spray, and lots of activities are planned . You can view the schedule on their web page, http://www.patriot-place.com/. (Patriot Place management promises good weather this time!) Artists can set up their easels or tables anywhere provided they don't block store windows or pathways. But it's fun to paint together in small groups, so whoever wants to come can join us between 1 and 2 pm in the North Market area, between Davio's and Bar Louie's.

Bus Trip to the Clark Museum CANCELED

It was just announced today that this trip has been canceled.

RIWS Gallery Director, Kris Occhino has put together a bus trip to Williamstown, MA on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 to see the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. The Clark is an amazing museum and well worth your time to see. We will start the day with a docent tour of their permanent collection. Then you will have the rest of the morning to see the exhibit titled “Pissarro’s People” and the exhibit “Romantic Nature: British and French Landscapes”. You can go up the hill to another building on their campus to see an amazing fiber art exhibit by African artist, El Anatsui. We will enjoy our bag lunches outdoors in a nice space for that. Afterwards, plan on sketching or taking pictures of the scenery. From the top of the hill there is a view (overlook) where, on a clear day, you can see all the way to Vermont! Then later in the afternoon we will take the bus to the Williams College Museum, a unique teaching museum. Admission is free. Finally, the bus will take us to the Williams Inn for a dinner before we head home.

Sixteen relatives of Angela Vadeboncoeur have assembled their art for a special group exhibit in her memory at the Norfolk Library during the month of August. Angela, who recently passed away peacefully at the age of 93, was dearly loved by her artistic children and grandchildren, two of whom are active members of the Foxboro Art Association -- Diane Scotti and Kim Weineck. (If it rains we will do it the next day, on Sunday the 21st. )

The plan is for artists to assemble together in the cut-through street between Davio's and Bar Louie's about 2 pm, unload your painting stuff, and then park in a nearby parking lot. Then the artists will fan out in small clusters of three or four to paint.

The idea is to create a mini-Paris for a few hours and to raise the public's consiousness of the talent in their own backyard. But mostly it's about having fun and socializing with fellow artsists.

You don't have to paint store fronts.

You can bring a photo reference and finish something that you started a long time ago.

Since it can sometimes be windy there, you might want to bring a jug or two of water and a bungee cord to weigh down your easel.

Weather permitting it will be great.

It is centrally loated in downtown Franklin at 5 Main Street, just behind Berry Insurance, and offers the opportunity for members to exhibit their work, either individually or as part of a larger group. Please consider this another wonderful opportunity to display your work for others to see. The Franklin Art Center has wall space sufficient to exhibit approximately 30 pieces. Susan Kelley Is Teaching and Exhibiting in June

Susan Kelley was elected to the 2011-12 Painting Jury to select art for the Rockport Art Assoc. State House Holiday Card Contest (Seniors Only)

State Representative Dan Winslow (R-Norfolk) announces the 15th Annual Senior Citizens Artistic Interpretation of the State House Holiday Card Contest. Sponsored by the Secretary of State’s office, the theme is ‘December Holiday at the State House’. It is open only to citizens who are 62 and over.
It can be any in medium and must be between 5”x7” and 18”x24”, with the State House being the focal point or included as part of the main theme. It should be matted and framed but if the artist is unable to mat or frame the entry, the Secretary of State’s office will provide the matting using basic materials. Entries must have the artist’s name, address and telephone number printed on the back.
Entries must be received by August 1, 2011 by being mailed or delivered directly to Dolores McCray, Commonwealth Museum, Massachusetts Archives Building, 220 Morrissey Boulevard, Boston, MA 02125. Entries will be judged by professional artists. If you want your artwork displayed on the website, a signed authorization form must also be attached. The authorization forms are available on-line at www.state.ma.us/sec/trs or by contacting Representative Winslow’s office at 617-722-2060.
This year’s winning cards will be reproduced and sold as the State House Gift Card
with the artist’s name printed on the card. The Office of the Secretary will retain ownership rights to the artwork only as a card. An Affirmation of Award will be presented to selected artists in a ceremony held at the Commonwealth Museum in early autumn at a date to be announced. Artwork may be retrieved during the ceremony, but if an artist cannot attend, the Secretary of State’s Office will gladly return their artwork to the artist.

We held our final meeting of the school year on May 10 at a brand new location, St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Foxboro, and elected officers for next year:

Haydi Hurley was re-elected Secretary
Paula DePierro was re-elected Treasurer.

Kathy Hutchinson, who has served admirably as President for the past three years, is stepping down because of a job conflict on Tuesday nights -- when we have to meet at St. Mark's. But she promises to stay involved and hopefully continue to write her beautiful columns for our Newsletter.

Our annual scholarships were also announced: Kim Weineck received the Member Scholarship to help pay for a painting workshop. Kim has been active behind the scenes in a number of activities to include helping establish this blog page.

The Foxboro High School winner's name was also announced, but we will withhold her name here, pending the official notification.

Other business included a discussion of the annual Fall Members' Show which this October will be exhibited at the new gallery at Patriot Place. Patriot Place Changes Name of Gallery

Patriot Place has inserted the word "Studio" into the title of the new art gallery there. So now the new title is the "Art Gallery & Studio at Patriot Place". At our last meeting Jack Gannon announced he had negotiated space for an art gallery in one of the vacant stores at Patriot Place, but that the details were still to be determined. Since our meeting on April 13, a lot has happened.

The “Art Gallery at Patriot Place” will be open weekends beginning April 29. Six anchor artists, from the Foxboro Art Association, will staff the gallery and fill 60% of the wall space with their works. The remaining 40% will be filled by three different “featured artists” each weekend to ensure a fresh display. More importantly, the gallery will be available for our annual Fall Members’ Show in October. So start painting! We now have a place to show our work while the Boyden Library is closed for reconstruction.

The gallery is located at store #217, at the Cinema end of the mall, diagonally between Life is Good and CBS Scene, and aside of Fossil – a high-end accessories store. And it already has a blog: artgalleryatpatriotplace.blogspot.com

To help recoup start-up & on-going costs, there will be a per weekend fee of $25 for all featured artists. There is no commission on sales. Each artist must sign an insurance waiver daily to protect Patriot Place from any injury liabilities. Each featured artist must be present during the weekend to sell their art.

This is a major coup for Jack and a wonderful opportunity for members of the Foxboro Art Association. We are goin’ Uptown for our Members Show in October! And who knows what else might develop? In the meantime, all are invited to drop by and check out the new gallery! Jack’s goal is to make it FUN, RELAXING and ENJOYABLE! Let’s help him make it so.

Another Great Demo

At our meeting on April 13, guest artist Dianne Panarelli Miller painted an amazing portrait of raffle winner Ben Macomber. Dianne, besides being a great painter, is also a terrific teacher and urged the artists in the audience to paint as often as they can to get better. Meanwhile she made painting Ben's portrait look easy, painting effortlessly (it seemed) as she described her portrait process step by step. It was our last meeting at the Boyden Library for 18 months or so, until the library finishes its renovation, and it ended with a bang. Next month, we will begin meeting on Tuesdays in the Parish Hall at St. Mark's Episcopal Church -- next to the High School. And our guest demonstrator will be watercolorist Marla Greenfield. Boyden Art Auction A Big Success

Thanks to the generosity of scores of local artists, the long awaited art auction to benefit the Boyden Library in Foxboro was a big success. Held Saturday night, March 26, at the Foxboro Country Club, the event entertained a crowd of more than 150, including more than 70 enthusiastic bidders. Preliminary figures show that more than $13,000 were bid on 53 works of art -- an amazing achievement. But it didn't start out that way as bidders cautiously started out seeking bargain-basement deals. But as the evening progressed, the bidders warmed up and became more and more aggressive. It didn't hurt that many of the bidders were some of the donating artists themselves. It also didn't hurt that co-auctioneers Bill Greider and Kevin Weinfeld (see above photo)did a masterful job of extracting ever higher bids while entertaining the crowd with frequent funny quips. The highlights included a winning bid of $1,050 for Jackie Canna's watercolor painting of "Founder's Day Parade" and $1,100 for Mark Perry's wooden sculpture "Curlew Decoy". In all, it was a fun evening which accomplished its primary mission of raising extra money for the Boyden Library. The Foxboro Art Association is proud to have participated in this effort as a way of thanking the Boyden for its many years of support.

Get Me To The Church On Time

Some time this May or June, the Boyden Library in Foxboro will relocate to smaller quarters to make way for the renovation project which will double its size. The renovation is expected to take about 18 months. So, starting in May, the Foxboro Art Association will begin meeting in the Parish Hall of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. The hall is bigger and brighter than our current room at the library; it has an adjacent kitchen, and plenty of parking. St. Mark’s is conveniently located at 116 South St., next to Foxboro High School, and only ¾ of a mile from the Boyden Library. You get there by simply going around the Common rotary, and taking the right on South Street, just before taking Route 140 towards Mansfield. St. Mark’s is on the left, just before the high school entrance. The only glitch is we cannot meet there on Wednesdays. Instead we must switch our meetings to the second Tuesday of the month. So beginning May 10, we will start meeting on Tuesdays . (It will be daylight in May, so it will be easy to find.) And since we don’t meet during the summer, we will resume meeting there next September – September 14 to be exact. We plan to use St. Mark’s until the Fall of 2012, when we can hopefully return to the Boyden Library and a more spacious meeting room. Note however that we still need a gallery to exhibit our Members’ Shows. That search continues.

Art Auction Drop-Off Successful

On Saturday, February 26, 44 generous artists delivered 51 art works valued at more than $10,000 in total for the Boyden Library Art Auction. The 51 works will hang in the Fuller Room for 4 weeks until the art auction Saturday evening, March 26.
Janet Pineault, one of the LIbrary Trustees, and a member of the Foxboro Art Association for many years, greeted and thanked the donating artists in person. The works were of high quality (of course) and were well-received by library staff and patrons who happened by. A reporter for the local newspaper, the Foxboro Reporter, also dropped by and took lots of photos. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all 44 of the the generous artists and those stalwarts who helped hang the works: Kathy Hutchinson, Haydi Hurley, Vera Cross and Frank Quinn.

There will be a reception on Saturday, Feb. 12, 4-6 pm, featuring refreshments -- likely to spoil your supper -- and entertainment provided by the Shane Wood Jazz Trio. The other artists are Michael Evans (pastels), Madeline Bolger (drawings) and Judith Moffat (children's book illustrator). This sounds like a good way to spend what might otherwise be another cold and blustery Saturday.

Franklin Art Assn Show

Members of the Franklin Art Association will exhibit their paintings at the Franklin Library, 118 Main Street, Franklin, MA, Feb. 5-12. Their opening reception will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, 2-4 pm. This promises to be a good show -- especially since many members of the Franklin Art Association are also members of the Foxboro Art Association.

Boyden Library Art Auction

As of January 16, we have 31 members of the Foxboro Art Association who have volunteered to donate a work of art to the Boyden Library Art Auction. This is a wonderful opportunity for our members to gain exposure in the local community and we are hoping that another 10 or so members will join us and agree to submit a framed work for this major event. The auction will be held March 26 at the Foxboro Country Club, but all the donated art will hang in the library for the previous month as a preview for prospective bidders. Accordingly, we are asking members to drop off their donations Saturday morning, Feb. 26, between 10 and 12. The works will then be hung that afternoon. We are also asking that the donors provide a brief bio that we can insert in a program book for all to review. Finally, each work should be accompanied by the following info:

Plus background info about the work that might add meaning (and value).

You do not have to be a member to donate, so if you know an artist who would like to participate, feel free to invite him/her. Also, any donor is entitled to one free ticket to the event. January Exhibitions

Two of our members are exhibiting their paintings this month (January). And while it's too late to attend their receptions, it is not too late to view their work.
BJ Bjork has 40 of his paintings on display at the Boyden Library in Foxboro and George Ransom has 45 of his "Monhegan Island" paintings on display at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in the Walpole Mall. If you can, try and see both exhibitions.

Lussier Workshop Very Helpful

David & Pam Lussier conducted a terrific workshop for 10 of our members the weekend of January 8-9. Their theme was how to paint from a photo while incorporating the visual aspects that photos tend to distort. In other words, how to make your paintings come to life. All ten participants found the workshop to be very helpful; and many commented that they were learning new techniques for the first time -- and in the process, they managed to produce some wonderful paintings. Thanks to Tony Donovan and Paula DePierro for helping make this workshop a reality.

BJ Bjork Reception January 8

Kicking off the new year, the noted artist and teacher from Foxboro, BJ Bjork, will be displaying his art at the Boyden Library during the month of January. This exhibit will include many watercolors, acrylics and oils, some of which he painted "live" during his Foxboro Cable television show "Let's Paint the Town with BJ Bjork". In addition, BJ will host a reception on Saturday afternoon, January 8, 1-4 pm. Come and view up close the work of this talented artist and meet a fun-loving art teacher at the same time.

Ralph Calderwood is displaying 50 of his paintings at the Boyden Library during December. That's right, fifty paintings! The paintings are in watercolor, pastel, and oil -- plus some plein air works as well. You may recognize a few ribbon winners from past Member Shows. Ralph will hold a reception at the library this Saturday, Dec. 4, from12 noon to 2 pm. Come and congratulate Ralph on his wonderful paintings.
